John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American, born in
Italy and living most of his adult life in London. This new print from his painting
"Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" pictures two little girls lighting Chinese
lanterns for a garden party. the girls stand in a profusion of lilies and roses, which
perhaps, inspired the title. Before electric lights were common, candle lit lanterns such
as these were popular for outdoor lighting. They must have posed a fire hazard since the
