Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was born in Germany, but grew up in Massachusetts. His imposing, monumental landscape painting influenced a generation of painters. His rugged, idealized landscapes of Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada show an abundance of detail and dramatic lighting. Bierstadt was awed by the magnificence of the mountains and skies of the far west. He captured the awe and beauty these scenes held before civilization began to encroach upon their beauty. Bierstadt's rugged, romanticized landscapes of the West, painted on a grand scale with an abundance of detail and dramatic lighting, captured the imagination of the 19th century art collectors and their interest catapulted him to the top of the American Art market. His painting brought record prices and he enjoyed tremendous success and recognition in his lifetime.
