Artist Joseph Holston lives and works in Maryland. He began painting more than 30 years ago. Holston is self-taught, and his earliest pieces employed realist techniques. Over time, though, he adopted a cubist abstractionist style, using segments of vibrant color to define a central figure that is stripped of all but its essential lines and form. Holston enjoys a national reputation, and his works have appeared in The Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio, the Smithsonian Institutions Anacostia Museum in Washington, D.C., and the APEX museum in Georgia. His work is also part of many private collections, including those of television and radio personality Bill Moyers and musician Wynton Marsalis. Holston has been a guest lecturer at Howard University and the University of Maryland, College Park, among other institutions, and was chosen to be the official artist of the Chicago Jazz Festival in 1996 and 1997.
