Paul Cezanne was born Jan. 19, 1839 in Aix-en-Provence, France. He was one of the greatest of the Post Impressionist artists. Cézanne's works and ideas were influential in the development of many 20th-century art movements, especially Cubism. Cézanne's art was misunderstood and discredited during most of his life. His style grew out of Impressionism and eventually challenged all the conventional values of painting in the 19th century. His style exemplified personal expression and the integrity of the painting itself. He has been called the father of modern painting. Paul Cezanne died on Oct. 22, 1906 in Aix-en-Provence, France.
