The serene and majestic beauty of Native Americans are
nowhere more compellingly captured than in the lens of Edward S. Curtis. This art print of
his 1903 photograph of a Mohave woman reveals the quiet gentility of this people. Although
they have always been a peaceful tribe, the average Mohave brave stood 6 foot tall in the
1600's when Spanish Conquistadors wandered into their lands in the southwest. The Spanish,
who averaged 5 foot 3 inches in height, fled in terror from these giants. It probably
added to their fearsome appearance that they practiced the art of tattooing and even in
the mid-1900's there were still many Mohave women who had facial tattoos. This print is
