The serene coastal landscapes of Albert Swayhoover blend a contemporary feel for color and light with a more traditional, impressionistic style. He manipulates his chosen medium of oil with palette knives, occasionally using a brush for the finer details. It is difficult to imagine that delicate beach grasses, as well as fierce storm clouds are all achieved using quick strokes with the edge of a knife. He notes, "I can achieve painterly surfaces without the fussiness of brush strokes. Colors stay vibrant and shapes stay crisp." Born in New York City in 1931, he attended the State University of New York at Farmingdale and the School of Visual Arts, but pursued a career in advertising because he did not feel a career as a fine artist would provide enough financial stability for a young family. He is self-taught as a fine artist and, finally, after he retired, he became a full-time painter.
