Paul de Longpre (1855-1911) was born in Lyon, France in 1855. By the age of 12 he was earning an income painting flowers on fans for a Parisian firm. Paul De Longpre was a well known and well exhibited artist in Paris when he moved to New York in 1890. Following a hugely successful exhibition in New York, Paul de Longpre moved to Los Angeles in 1898. He built a large California Mission style home in Los Angeles, complete with tended gardens that became a tourist attraction, attracting some 25,000 each year. He painted floral still life almost exclusively in watercolors. Paul de Longpre found inspiration in the roses on his estate.
