Vincent Willem van
Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the south of the Netherlands. After working for a
while for an art dealership where he was developed a love for art, Van Gogh thought for a
while of becoming a clergyman in order to help those less fortunate. When he decided to
become an artist, nobody could have guessed his immense talent. With surprising speed, the
clumsy but enthusiastic apprentice developed a strong artistic personality with his color
effects and simple but unforgettable compositions. His early work was devoted to peasant
life after the fashion of Millet and Breton, but his works were dark and did not sell. He
eventually moved to Paris where he was greatly influenced by the Impressionist painters,
adopting their bright colors and broken brushwork. He experimented with pointilism and
other styles. Eventually, he became fascinated with Japanese prints, and incorporated
their stylized contours and coloration. His mental health deteriorated to the point that
he was hospitalized. While there he painted three hundred works. Van Gogh finally
committed suicide in 1880.
